General Discussion / The Chipawok is Back!
October 22, 2013, 12:56:23 AM
Heya. We were playing Minecraft mostly for a few months, then got into Terraria for a while, and now a lot of us have moved back to TF2 again: it is pretty much the circle of gaming. I can update the Minecraft server Friday evening or Saturday depending on my plans for this week -- I had to recompile the 1.6.2 version due to an issue with zombies that would lag out the server, and I want to spend some time seeing if it is fixed in 1.6.4 and making changes if needed. Could you remind me since I am insanely forgetful? I wanted to last week, but I was traveling for work a few days then forgot to because TF2 addiction. >.<

Cool to see you around again. :3

[MC] UA Minecraft Survival (Archive) / 1.6.2 Update
September 02, 2013, 09:41:53 PM
Updated: September 2, 2013

The update includes the following along with the normal Minecraft 1.6.2 update:
*
Zombie pathfinding changed to be ~3200% more efficient in some cases -- should reduce server lag by a lot
* Zombies will very rarely drop name tags
* Horse spawning changed.
   * Default spawning mechanics replaced with allowing horses to spawn in existing chunks

   * Horses spawn in existing Plains biomes rarely
* Donkeys spawn high up in existing Extreme Hills biomes rarely
* Undead and Skeletal horses spawn in existing Hell biomes extremely rarely

* Added Undead and Skeletal horses:
   * Have fire immunity (as with other Nether-based mobs)
* Already tamed (required due to Minecraft preventing taming)
* Cannot be bred
* Cannot wear armour
* Can have up to 5 more hearts of health than normal horses

* █████ ██████ can be extremely rarely gotten from █████

[TF2] UA MarioKart 24-7 / Halp
August 30, 2013, 10:45:20 AM
Server went down for a while due to sudden, unexpected maintenance. Then the server was moved to a machine in Texas for about 2 months. A lot of people were lost when this IP changed (since TF2's server list doesn't save domains, only the resolved IPs) for one. Secondly, a lot of people were lost over this 2 month time due to an extremely laggy server that was practically unplayable over half the times I was on it at least. The server was finally moved again due to this issue, though the old server's title was replaced with info for the new one. Still, I am sure some people were too lazy to copy the IP for the new one.

There's also that a lot of regulars got caught up in other games (e.g. Minecraft, DCUO, Warframe).

Zombies in general actually. I am on vacation atm, so I won't be able to go into a lot of detail. 1.6 Zombies had their pathfinding increased to a range of 40 default, a lot more when swarming. The problem is the A* search algorithm used for pathing doesn't have an appropriate condition to deal with situations where there are no possible routes to their target. This results in massive resource hits from only a dozen zombies if such a situation occurs, lagging out the whole server. If you want an example of this, check out the problems during UHC season 12 on youtube (issues start around episode 3 or so). We could update the server to 1.6.2, but this also means the server will likely lag every few seconds (especially if zombie spawners/grinders are active).

I've been trying to fix it, but its a tad hard when you need to modify obfuscated Minecraft server code and recompile Bukkit. Also when you are on vacation.

EDIT: Was working on finishing up coding some changes and recompiling bukkit this morning. Can't make any guarantees that it'll work, plus I am on vacation until Monday. I'll try to test it when I get back.

--- Update ---

Code modifications seem to be working fine. I was able  to get my test server to handle 400 simultaneous zombies attempting to  pathfind to a target over lava instead of 15. The plugins are also  working fine. Just need to work on a few other things for 1.6 and should  be good for when I get back from vacation.

The issue: lightning was creating fires that would never go out.

Pretty much lightning generates fires wherever it strikes. Normally these fires are supposed to go out due to the rain during thunderstorms, but rain won't put out the fires if FireTicks are off (no fire spread / block burn), which is how the server is configured. This meant that every single time lightning struck, an ever-burning flame would be lit on that block. I've installed a small plugin I made (which I've properly tested all logic branches and functionality on) that prevents lightning from starting fires so that we don't have this issue anymore. Existing fires will still be there, but I'll see if I can clean things up a bit in higher-traffic areas.

Hopefully this will stop the landscape from looking like the apocalypse has come and set the countryside ablaze, fire and brimstone, blablabla.

If anyone needs some help cleaning up existing fires near where they live, just let me know.

Have you tried using a high-res texture pack and seeing if the fishing rod looks better then?

Curious if anyone has any cool ideas for devices to build using redstone (and redstone accessories) and various other blocks (e.g.: water, ice). I think its pretty fun to build these sorts of things and it'd be cool to hear some ideas. Especially functional ones. :3

Quote from: Calvingreen17.;9490I do have the latest version.

And it is client side. TRied to join other servers, no luck, Minecraft cant even reach them or resolve the host name.

It sounds like your firewall is blocking the connection. Are you using the default Windows firewall? What OS?

I personally like McMMO + Feed the Beast using MCPC+. Adds a lot of functionality and using a modpack means you don't have to deal with compatability issues between mods and managing updates across the plethora of mods.

If we're not doing FtB, then I'd like to nominate Buildcraft, Railcraft, and RedPower for building cool contraptions. I think Equivalent Exchange is also fun, but it's a game-breaking pandora's box in terms of what it lets you do if not very carefully configured, so probably wouldn't work well here.

Trinity, do you have recommendations for Static based on what people have said so far? You know the most here about Minecraft mods.

I looked at McMMO and it looks pretty cool!

I would LOOOVE to see Feed the Beast on the server. I already play elsewhere if I want vanilla Minecraft, so a vanilla server doesn't really appeal to me. Especially so since it will take way too long to get anything done with TNT disabled on the server. I'll probably play more if there are automation/redstone type mods.

And for people who have trouble running Minecraft, I highly recommend installing Optifine. It adds a lot of graphics options both low-end and high-end, as well as optimizes the game. With lower settings my friend went from 6-13 FPS vanilla Minecraft to 25-30 FPS with Optifine.

What I said in the first post:
Quotedamage not registering for 1-2 seconds, explosions  often not  working correctly, certain sounds not happening, text chat  messages  taking forever to display to people, voice chat being choppy  to the  point of being incomprehensible
[/COLOR]

The server's control panel was also taking forever to load according to Tetra.

I am still going to be doing this if anyone was wondering. Just might be a few mins late. :p

--- Update ---

Going to have to cancel and reschedule because Art of War has no idea how to keep a server running and can go suck so many bags of dicks.

i think Static is at work right now so we are pretty much stuck waiting for him to get home to find out what is going on with the server

I was getting around 30-35 ping on the new server. Though I can deal with ~135 ping or more, I hated the jittery movement on the old server.

Quote from: leviathan;9220So you will be basing it on the amount of points each player would have at the random time?

At the time of each key giveout I'll be using Wolfram Alpha to get a random number. I will then go from top scoring player to bottom, and whoever is the nth highest scoring player at the time gets a key. It's just to ensure unbiased statistical randomness.

Quote from: royce212;9233Sounds fun, I'm in. 80 though? That means I'm pretty much guaranteed a few if this hits 20.

If this thread gets posts by 20 different people then, yes, there will be 80 keys total. I can easily add another 40 keys to my inventory as soon as that is the case.

QuoteShe was pretty much the only admin that did much for the players.

Mega does a lot and really doesn't get much (or any) thanks for what he does. He often had to restart the server when it would crash or stop allowing players in mid-day. He also actively tried to advertise the new IP address when the server changed in order to help people find it. He tends to be more neutral when people have issues and I have not seen him play favourites.

Static owns the server, works on the map, and works on the plugins. That said, he does have that frustrating combination of laziness plus the drinking problem plus seeming ADD when it comes to what he's doing that causes things to not be completed as fast as people should expect, and I can certainly see how this would give the impression of not doing things.

Quotedisabling aimbot detection

I had actually noticed that Sprint and RTD were disabled on the server and was the one who brought up plugins being disabled when this occured. From what I was told the aimbot detection plugin was also disabled; I would like to hear from static to ensure this isn't a rumour gotten out of hand, however. But, Ninny, you shouldn't be disabling plugins without a very good reason: most likely because they are lagging or crashing the server. Disabling them solely because you don't like them gives an inconsistent experience to players. It would've been better to just make a thread as you later did and ask people what they wanted: that actually got somewhere and had no negative consequences because you checked with what people playing wanted and people had time to respond if they wished to. Again, I would also like to hear from static on what rules he set on disabling plugins and how he communicated them.

Quote Monk didn't kill with the 999 HP

I am sorry, but this does not justify giving someone 999 HP. For one, there is no good reason for a player to be given that much health purely because an admin felt like it. Second, it negatively impacts the fun of others. People trying to actually play the game by killing the other team will end up targeting this player, likely unable to kill them, and then die to their teammates. This is frustrating; it isn't fair at all to them. Third, it means playing favourites. Again, this isn't really fair to the rest of the players.

There is more I'd like to add, but I'll save that for when I make my decision about what I think should be done.

Now, I do not know the actual events that occured here, and making a single-line response to accusations of admin abuse doesn't really help your case. Ninny, I'd appreciate it if you could give a more detailed account of what happened. Same for Dan or whoever else directly witnessed this. I have no interest in unreliable, repetitive second-hand accounts of what they think they were told occured.

Honestly, Ninny, I was going to be supportive of having your power re-instated. But that you never brought up giving your friend 999 HP as even a potential form of admin abuse really hurts your credibility. And I am disappointed that you did that.

Currently still waiting to decide
